Mike Phelps- swimming icon earns big sports award

Michael Phelps just received the 55th "Sportsman of the Year Award". This award is given to athletes based on both accomplishments (like his Olympic medal wins and World Record achievements this past summer in the Olympics), and on character.

A young Phelps is making an impression based on several personal accomplishments. He has made Americans pay more attention to swimming. And he is always heard and seen supporting his team-mates. He has not made his wins all his own: he always gives his team-mates credit and takes pride in their accomplishments.
